Welcome to Class Five
Our class team is Mrs Wilde and Mrs Horsfield
We are excited to begin our learning journey together. We are all about the positive in Year 5 -The adults and children have come up with a class charter based on kindness, respect and hard work. Children will be rewarded with certificates, stickers and raffle tickets to acknowledge their individual efforts. In addition, we encourage the whole class to support each other to be the best they can be. Children will collectively earn class points and this will be rewarded with a class treat voted on by the class each half term.
We will be posting all homework on Seesaw each Friday and ask that this is completed by the following Thursday. We will also ensure that every child has a book from school and a reading record. We encourage children to read as often as possible and we will help and support them to find the texts that motivate them to read. We will also pop extra reading opportunities linked to our learning on Seesaw. Any reading can be recorded in the reading record and we will check these weekly, so that we can acknowledge and reward regular readers.
In year 5 individual times tables are not sent home but we expect children to be able to know and use them. Please support your child with these. You could even have a times table challenge in the car or walk to school. Who will be the fastest you or your child? Do you have a rapid recall of your 8 times table?
Swimming will be on Monday afternoons, so please ensure your child has their swimming kit in school every Monday. PE is on a Tuesday, so please make sure your child brings their PE Kit on this day.
We are happy to meet with any parent if you have any enquiries. If it is a quick question, we will be at door before and after school. Also a great way to send us a quick message is on Seesaw and we will be able to respond to you on there. If you do not have a parent log on for Seesaw, please let us know and we can add you on there – we do encourage you to sign in, as we will send reminders and notifications on there as and when required.

Street Dance
We loved our street dance workshop today.
Fabric Lenny
We worked with the artist Fabric Lenny to create these wonderful pieces of art linked to Windrush as part of our topic on the British Empire and the important contribution made to our culture and country.
Opera North
We had so much fun with Marie-Claire and Peter at our first Opera North rehearsal - we love the quirky Wonderland Restored and cannot wait to perform at Barnsley Metrodome in July.

Father Christmas
We enjoyed having a chat with Father Christmas when he came to visit us.
Dance
In PE - we have been learning Bollywood dance moves - we have been using the music Jai Ho and Spice up your Life - both great for doing our specialist move of Shimmying!
Reading for Pleasure
We have enjoyed our Class book so much; we wrote a persuasive letter to Mrs Adams to get some more books by the same author. She was so impressed she said 'Yes'.
Typography and 3D designs
In Art, we have learned about typography and map work and linked this to our work on Mountains and Everest - we created 3D models that were so brilliant we held a little impromptu art exhibition for Mrs Dolan and Year 4 - we have created digital artwork from the models and will share these when we have perfected them.
Science
In Science, we have been exploring the properties of different materials.
National CoalMining Museum
Children were exemplary and a credit to Silkstone - enjoyed learning about the Victorian workers in the mine and meeting Sam - whose family were actually very prolific in instigating change and better conditions in the Welsh Mines. We loved meeting the pit ponies, especially Flynn - who was huge! We also learnt how to protect our packed lunches from rats - which linked brilliantly to our learning in Science about properties of materials.
Self Portraits
We are incredibly proud of our self portraits, created in the style of Romero Britto.
Dan the Skipping Man
We enjoyed learning different skipping styles with Dan the Skipping Man.
Run for Macmillan
Well done everyone for running a mile to raise funds for Macmillan.

Opera North
We enjoyed working with Opera North. The songs were tricky to learn but we persevered and learnt them all - ready for a performance at the Metrodome of the Water Diviners Tale.
Easter Biscuits
Everyone enjoyed designing, making and decorating their Easter biscuits.
World Book Day
We enjoyed World Book Day and dressing up as our favourite characters from stories. We also shared a book with a child in Key Stage 1 and enjoyed listening to stories throughout the day. What a wonderful way to celebrate our love of reading.
The Highwayman
Class 5 have been studying the poem “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes. They have worked really hard to understand the themes of the poem and the character's motives. They used role play to act out a scene from the story and shared it with their class. They also produced some wonderful pieces of art using charcoal to replicate the amazing illustrations in the story. We are very proud of their work.
Indoor Bowls
A member of Penistone Bowls Club came and delivered a session with the children. They practised bowling skills, target practice and accuracy. The session was much enjoyed by all!
NSPCC Number Day
We enjoyed dressing up for 'Number Day' for the NSPCC. Here we are practising our multiplication skills as part of the TT Rockstars rocks challenge.
Opera North
We are learning 'The Water Diviner's Tale' for a performance with Opera North in July. Here, the children are starting to learn their new songs!
Father Christmas
We enjoyed visiting Father Christmas in his grotto. He very kindly gave us an early Christmas present. It was a lovely treat on the day of our Christmas Fayre.
Christmas Jumper Day
Here are some pictures of Class 5 looking very festive in their Christmas jumpers. We had cool snowmen, flashing reindeers and sparkly Santas in the class! Thank you to all parents for sending donations in for our Christmas Fayre as part of Christmas jumper day.
National Coal Mining Museum
Class 5 had a wonderful time at the National Coal Mining Museum. They enjoyed travelling deep underground into the mine and experienced pitch-black darkness, along with crawling through tiny tunnels as the coal miners would have done. Stroking Finn the horse and learning about pit ponies and the work they did, was a memorable part of the visit. Class 5 also met Sally, a young child miner, who told them all about her terrible life deep in the mines. Once we returned to school, we used her evidence to write a discussion text about child mining in Victorian texts. We have also written thank you letters to our guides for the fabulous day we had.
Dodworth Miners
We loved our rugby training with Dodworth Miners. We all got stuck in and got very muddy!
Visit to the church
As part of our local history topic we visited Silkstone Church to learn all about the Huskar Pit disaster. Mr Travis was a fantastic guide and we learnt lots about what it would be like down in the mine and the impact of the disaster on the village.
Spooky costumes
We all joined in dressing up at the end of half term.
Percussion
Every Friday we have our percussion lesson. We enjoy playing together and creating some great (and very loud) music.
Drama
We are reading Streetchild and enjoying using drama to bring the characters to life, which helps us develop our writing.
