A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understand of the Earth’s key physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
We want our pupils to be amazed by our fantastic world and be curious about where places are, what they are like and the people who live there. We want our pupils to develop an extensive geographical knowledge and vocabulary. We want our pupils to understand the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected and how much human and physical environments are interrelated. We want our children to have a good understanding of the physical and human geographical features of the world and the collective responsibility we share for its protection.
Lessons have a clear learning outcome, explicit teaching of knowledge and skills and opportunities to develop and apply learning in a range of contexts. Learning is sequenced to enable children to build on their knowledge and make links with their learning. In Geography children develop enquiring geographical minds and the ability to apply questioning skills and to use effective analytical and presentational skills. We promote critical thinking skills that enable our children to reach clear conclusions and explain their findings through reasoned arguments. We use fieldwork to develop geographical skills and techniques. Children have an understanding of climate stage and what they can do in response. Our school Eco team supports this aspect of the curriculum across the school. Formative assessment is ongoing throughout each and every lesson. It judges progress and enables teachers to make flexible adaptions to their planned teaching. Through this regular ongoing assessment, tasks are matched to the ability of each child through differentiated activities and adult support which enables a level of challenge that is stimulating for children and develops their questioning skills.
We use summative assessment to assess foundation subjects and identify any gaps or misconceptions to be addressed or passed onto the following teachers. This is used to show clear coverage and progression.
Our children will be critical thinkers who are able to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in a good geographical knowledge and a clear understanding of current and contemporary issues in society and the environment. Our pupils will be both passionate and curious about the world they live in and the people they share it with. They will be aware of our earth’s fragility and feel some responsibility towards protecting it.
